How to disable speedstep in bios

It's main purpose was to be a work horse for my Traktor S4 DJ deck. Now, with the Mac, everything worked perfectly, but with the Asus, now and the the sound stutters.

This is very annoying, not to mention embarassing when DJ'ing a set.

I contacted Traktor support, and they told me to use a utility called LatencyMonwhich was created especially to check for latency issues on a computer which is meant to be used for real-time audio. I disabled all these drivers in the device manager, and now everything is almost perfect. It's supposed to be an i7, running at 2.

This is because of the Intel Speedstep technology, which is meant to throttle down the CPU speed when not necessary to be at full speed.

Of course, this is unnecessary and even more: unwanted in my case, because I need all the processing power I can get. But in this case, there's no such option available in the laptop's bios. I already flashed the bios to the latest version, but no love. I searched for a small utility which could do the same, and stumbled onto SpeedSwitchXP. Unfortunately, as the name suggests, this only works for XP and I'm running Windows 7. I'm unable to find a Windows 7 alternative.

Does anybody here know of another way I could disable Intel Speedstep? Though I think that it's a good idea to answer the SpeedStep question anyway, I don't think your laptop should be having trouble playing stutter free audio even when the CPU is running at the slower 1.

Another place to look for stuttering bugs is, surprisingly, the video drivers. I've found that a hitching display driver can mess up audio playback in some cases. Good idea Tony. I actually updated all the laptop's drivers already with the most recent I could find online.

So I'm certain all the drivers on the laptop now are the most recent available. As said, the only thing I didn't upgrade yet was the video card driver. This model actually uses two chipsets: and Intel for mild desktop work, enough for my uses and some nVidia Gforce chipset for games - which I don't play.

I'll update those as well, I don't know why I overlooked them in the first place. Thanks for the tip! I know there's always the Asio4all projectbut that's still in beta and I'd hate to use beta drivers on this PC.Menu Menu. Search Everywhere Threads This forum This thread.

I have a core i5 and when i am overclocking the CPU should i disable or enable Enhanced Intel speed-step in my bios? Feb 13, 5, 3 29, I have personally found while trying to find a good stable OC that turning off all power saving features and forcing the clocks to stay at max insures an easier time OCing.

So in my opinion yes turn it off then once you find the OC you want turn them back on and retest for stability. May 13, 4, 0 23, Mar 12, 14, 0 51, 1, If you have the owners manual of the motherboard then you will see what there are for power saving features.

There are not that many and fairly obvious. A good thing to do is tell us what motherboard you have so that is someone has the same or similar they can help you better.

I've tried to reduce the minimum processor speed from inside the OS, but it didn't work, and I didn't find anything about speedstep or minimum processor speed on the bios "setup" screen.

Could you help me on that? Thanks in advance. Joined Oct 1, Messages 2, 0. Maybe try using a different virtual machine software? Unfortunately, I've already tried a several other VM softwares and they didn't work out. I want to disable it so I can at least copy the files inside the VM and create another one, if that's the case.

Where that is located differs depending on what kind of BIOS you have.

Article ID Combined with existing power-saving features, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology can provide balance between power production and consumption. It uses design strategies that include the following:.

The resource is a ready reference for developers interested in new user-level or in-kernel policy based on Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology. The operating system sees two virtual processors.

Requests to change the power state are prioritized between each virtual processor by the BIOS and the operating system. The power state will default to that of the virtual processor requesting the highest state. Standard integration procedures should be followed for installing all system hardware components.

The second speed will be lower than the 1st speed see Figure 1. A lower second speed indicates that Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology has effectively lowered the processor voltage and core frequency.

Depending on system usage and design, lowered frequency can decrease average power consumption and heat production. If the processor is not in idle mode, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology can be enabled and both processors speeds can be equal. Try steps 1—3 again. Contact support. When booting Windows 7, my processor's frequency is still adjusted dynamically according to CPU load. NB: my Windows 7 power scheme is set up so that SpeedStep should not operate either.

Disabling speedstep doesn't do what you want it to do - it locks the CPU at its lowest frequency. You want to set the system to "always on" in the power management in the control panel. I want to disable the dynamic adjustement of the processor frequency, no matter if my processor frequency is low in the end.

Winforms chart control

I don't care if my processor is slow in the end. If you set it on high speed always, you will get less battery life, and possibly the other problems listed in the last post.

What version of Windows is on the system - and if you installed this yourself, did you install the Dell notebook system software and the Intel chipset driver? Both are needed for power management. I did a few more experiments. When SpeedStep is disabled in the BIOS, the dynamic frequency change will occur regardless of the power options in Windows 7: the frequency will go between 1.

And yes I did say with SpeedStep disabled. If it won't lock, then there is a difference between our units as to how Win 7 interacts with thew system BIOS, and you may not be able to lock in at a low speed.

Besides, when I am connected to internet using modem, the speed switches down to the 1. What is that for? I tried everything to maintain the speed at 3. I'm not sure if it is of any help with your problem but, as I've got a non-booting at the moment, I have had some time to study my new A23 bios. Thanks for the reply. Any comment?

I still insist that my guess sounds absurd!! Thanks for your reply. Here is what I did. I connected to internet via modem.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I download some patches for windows or something? My windows is XP home with SP1. My seemed to be locked into 1. I tried changing all the power settings and using Speedswitch XP but it was still the same. I'd seen somewhere that this was possibly bios-dependent and so I 'upgraded' to A23 from A In the bios, it now reports as running at 3GHz I've run chkdsk and found no problems.

I've even taken a disk from a Dell and tried it in place of the original and I still get the same error. I have tried Dell's technical support and they don't seem to know what to suggest now. I was trying to avoid a full re-install, but it is looking quite likely now. I have managed to also update the bios again fro A23 to A That went ok but I sill get the same problem.
